About Javea

Javea is situated on the most easterly point of mainland Spain at the North of the Costa Blanca between Valencia and Alicante, both airport cities are only a 100km distance.

Javea has been voted environmentally near perfect by the World Health Organisation and boasts 320 days of sunshine a year!

The coastline of Javea has scenic rocky coves, wonderful beaches and dramatic cliffs. Nearly every kind of water sport is catered for and for those who don’t want to get their feet wet there is golf (there are 7 golf resorts in between of Gandia to Benidorm), bowls, tennis, cycling, horse riding and hiking to name but a few.

Javea has a rich and fascinating history which shows the ancient town centre steeped in medieval history and has largely been preserved throughout the centuries.

Javea was first mentioned as an own VILLA in 1397, but it belonged to Denia.
The Romans had a big impact unsurprisingly when they started using it as a port, between the Arenal and the Port, you will see where 2 channels were carved out to be used in the fish salting process, or visiting the museum in the Old Town you see relics from that era.
The Islamic Moors arrived in the 9th Century until final expulsion in 1279, long time after the Romans abandoned Javea and it was left uninhabited, brought their art, culture and architecture into the region.
‘The Moors and the Christians’ is celebrated in Javea every year in July, a big festival during one week to show the battles between Muslims and Christians, representing the invasion through the Muslims and the reconquest through the Christians, and to mark the end of the Arabian dominion, which was an violent and bloody era in the Spanish history.
Between 1300 and 1680 Javea was frequently attacked by pirates, that’s made the citizen moving 2km inland and building the ancient city walls and towers to defend themselves like Granadella castle, watch towers of Ambolo and Portixol.
Javea was very important as well in the era of raisin trade throughout 18th and 19th century. (Raisin drying facilities) You can visit for example el Gran Riurau dels Català d’Arnauda.
You will find remain of all these different times to view for example like San Bartholomew church, the palace house of Antoni Banyuls, the municipal indoor Market and Dénia Castle.
